These open labs are conducted every Monday morning to give you an opportunity to ask questions of experts (well, hopefully they will know more than you do!). Drop by and let’s talk about computers!

***Personal Activities***

The computers (PC & MAC) in the Computer Center are there for your use at any time that they are not being used by a class. Check with the Senior Center (206 - 932 - 4044) to be sure that a class is not meeting at the time that you intend to come in. We have a full Internet connection for all computers so you can "surf" the World Wide Web, send and receive email, write and print letters.

Assistants needed for the Computer Basics Classes. lf you can manage to handle e-mail and navigate to a web site you could be a great deal of help to us. We are always short of assistants, the people that really make it possible for us to present these classes. A class consists of four two-hour sessions over a period of two weeks and we do one, and sometimes two. of these classes each month. Call the front desk for information: 932-4044.
Seattle Seniors Internet Group (SSIG) Free. No Registration Required.
This discussion group meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 1:00 pm at the Senior Center of West Seattle. We discuss our experiences with the internet­ -and with computers--with other seniors: All are welcome whether beginner or ‘old pro’.

Computer Basics (Seniors Training Seniors)
If you know nothing at all about computers, and want to find out if you would ike to learn more, this class would be a good choice. We will learn to tame the mouse, do some simple operations, get on the Internet and even open an email account. The class is designed as an overview allowing you to experience the use of a personal computer without getting too involved in any of the technical stuff. The class is presented as four, two-hour sessions for a total of 8 classroom hours. Registration is required. $5 member / $5 nonmember.

E-Mail
This class will cover setting up your email client for use with your email account at your Internet Service Provider (ISP). We will take a look at the use of Microsofts Outlook Express. Sending, replying to, forwarding messages, and sending and receiving attachments are the essentials that you need for suceessful emailing. There will be a total of 9 hours of class. Registration required: $25 member / $30 nonmember.

Internet (Browsing The Web)
Learn how to get access to all of the information that is available on the The class will discuss the structure of the Internet, how Internet addresses work, the different web browsers that are available, how to use the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser and configure it for your needs and how to use search engines. Eight hours of instruction over two days. Registration is required: $30 member / $40 nonmember.

Beginning Windows95/98/ME/XP
Learn about the Windows 95/98/ME/XP operating system. Each class will feature hands-on operation with an instructor's help as well as extensive preprinted notes. Twelve classroom hours. $45 member / $60 nonmember

Introduction to Microsoft Word (Word Processing)
This class will introduce you to creating documents with Microsoft Word. You will learn to format text, set up margins, copy, save, and do all of the operations necessary to create and print a letter--or a book. This 4-day class consists of twelve total classroom hours. $45 member / $60 nonmember

Microsoft Word II (Advanced)
This class is a follow-on to the Introduction to Microsoft Word (Word Processing) class. We will look more closely at creating documents that contain graphic elements, text boxes, and other appearance enhancements. 3 hours/day; four days. Prerequisite: you must have some familiarity/experience with Microsoft Word or have taken the Introduction to Microsoft Word class. $45 member / $60 nonmember

Introduction to Microsoft Excel
This class will introduce you to the world's most popular spreadsheet program, Microsoft Excel. Spreadsheets are electronic columnar pads. With them, you can calculate and recalculate entries with simple commands. You can also use them to create tables and lists, for everything from mailing lists and reading lists to cataloging your collections, which may then be searched and sorted easily. Twelve total classroom hours. $45 member / $60 nonmember

Greeting Cards
Put the power of our new computers to work creating your own personalized greeting cards, invitations, thank you notes, etc--for the holidays, birthdays, or any occasion. We'll be using moderately priced software to create cards that are better than the stores sell. 3 hours/day for 2 days. $20 members/$25 non-members.


Digital Image Editing (Workshop)
Digital cameras and image scanners let you editphotographs to remove blemishes, improve contrast, shift colors, change backgrounds; and do all sorts of improvements. This workshop will demonstrate what you can do with image editors. 3 hours. $10 members/$20 non-members.

Using Google (Workshop)
Google has emerged as the most effect tool we currently have for finding information on the Internet. 3 hours. $10 members/$12 non-members.

Digital Cameras (Workshop)
How do they work? What do you do with the pictures? What are the advantages over a regular camera: We'll try to answer these questions and more. A typical camera and its included software will be demonstrated.

Beginning Web Site Design Class
Would you like to have your own web page? This class can teach you some of the basic elements to conceiving and developing a simple web site. The focus will not be on the development tools, but rather on the fundamentals of designing a usable web site. $45 member / $60 nonmember.
