Greetings from me, D’vorah Kost, LICSW, social worker here at the Center, until another is hired, hopefully by February. Until then, my hours are Wednesdays only, from 9 am- 5 pm. However, I will be on vacation from Dec 24-Jan 20th, so wellness classes will be more limited until I return on Jan 25th.
During my absence, if you have problems or issues of a social/psychological nature, or emergency needs, you can always phone Senior Information & Assistance, which can help you with all kinds of services for Senior Citizens—206-448-3110. I encourage you to keep that number handy, as well as the Crisis Clinic, at 206-461-3222. Our Director, Karen Sisson, can also be of help 932-4044 ext 5.
Life's Journeys Support Group (NEW)
Dates: Mondays, Jan 23rd –March 5th
Time: 1-2:30 pm
Cost: suggested donation per week $5 or $20 for month
Info: This group is designed to be a safe container for raising issues that are personally challenging, be it losses or other life transitions, changes in health, roles, relationships, or whatever a member wants to bring up. All sharing is confidential. Facilitated by D’vorah Kost and Laurie Becharas, licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Please register in advance.

"Hearing Loss Support Group"
Dates: Last Wed of each month
Time: 1pm
Info: Come explore the interest level in having a group for the hearing impaired, and their loved ones. This is a group to support one another in the challenges of being hearing impaired, identifying the inherent problems and helping find solutions. Education, special presenters and resources can be introduced along the way. Future meetings will depend on the needs and wishes of participants. What this group becomes and achieves, depends on you, the attendee.

1. POWERFUL TOOLS FOR CAREGIVERS (six weeks) offered Aug/Sept & Feb/Mar emphasizes how important it is for unpaid family caregivers to TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES, as well as their loved one(s). We explore the stressors in being a caregiver and how to successfully navigate this unpredictable journey.
2. LIVING WELL WITH CHRONIC CONDITIONS (runs six weeks) offered April/May & Oct/Nov, explores the social/emotional/functional impact on our lives caused by chronic conditions, eg diabetes, arthritis, digestive, neurological, cardiac, respiratory or skeletal disorders, low vision, etc. We can’t cure the condition, but we can learn many effective tools for managing it, and breaking the following vicious cycle: disease process-pain-tension-shortness of breath, fatigue.
3. A MATTER OF BALANCE (runs eight weeks) offered June/July & Dec/Jan, addresses the fear of falling, reduces the risk of falls by encouraging activity and building confidence, teaches exercises that promote better balance, evaluates the safety of your home environment, among other things.

Info: Few of us were ever taught how to breathe for optimal benefit, and consequently consume far less oxygen than we are capable of. Our cells suffer for it. It‘s never to late to learn and practice deeper and longer respira-tions and get the most out of breathing.
Information and referral with basic needs assistance, housing or moving issues, psychosocial or medical concerns, grief support, issues of aging, etc.
Enhance Wellness

Individual sessions designed to support a healthy lifestyle. Perhaps you need encouragement to increase physical activity, eat more healthily, socialize more, reduce stress? Starting with an initial evaluation, you then set a goal and create an action plan for attaining your goal. In subsequent meetings, we track your process, problem-solve difficulties, and you achieve desired change.
PEARLS ("Program Encouraging Active Rewarding Lives for Seniors") is designed to help older adults re-cover from minor depression, which is characterized by at least 2 weeks of feeling sad, tired, irritable, losing in-terest and motivation, sleeping too much or too little, losing appetite or overeating, having trouble concentrat-ing, and no longer enjoying activities that once were pleasurable. PEARLS consists of eight confidential ses-sions over the course of 3 months, in which one learns and practices problem-solving skills, and increases pleasurable and physical activity. Most participants re-port improved mood as a result of this process. FREE

Gentle Adaptive Yoga class

This gentle yoga class includes meditation, breath work, poses and guided imagery. It is appropriate for anyone desiring a gentle meditative yoga practice, people with adaptive needs and at any level of fitness. Taught by Ada Reva Spae, a Kripalu certified yoga instructor, and registered nurse. She has practiced yoga throughout her adult life and taught yoga over 15 years, to a wide variety of individuals from a general population to people with chronic illness. Register 206-932-4044

We‘ll start each session with standing movement to some fun music, followed by some basic balance work, then seated strength training using resistance bands (provided). Since this is your class, you have input on the music choices too . . .

Sound Steps Hikes & Walks
Enjoy the great outdoors! Join us the first Monday of every month. Beginners welcome—you can walk as far as feels comfortable. Pick-up at time listed is from Jefferson Community Center. We help cover costs of our Sound Steps hikes through our annual ‘Walk-N-Roll’ Fundraising Walk (Wed, Sep 14); starting this quarter we will also accept donations at the end of every hike.
